THEIR Premier status secured with a win on the last day of the season, Alton can now focus their attention on this Sunday’s Southern Premier League T20 Cup final at the Ageas Bowl.
Victory would help erase memories of a disappointing second half of the league campaign, but the Brewers have rather a tough task on their hands – they face Havant, the 2017 SPL champions, who will be out to complete the double.
With Alton requiring two points for safety, Scott Myers had no hesitation in asking Burridge to bat first at The Ridge, meaning that four wickets would do the trick.
Dan Hewitt hit a salvo of early boundaries before falling to Ben Mortimer and when Sean Jamison, generating pace and bounce despite the slow nature of the pitch, bowled Joe Collings-Wells, Burridge were 40-2.
Two quick wickets then sealed the precious second point. Mortimer had Marcus Campopiano caught by Julian Ballinger and James Richards was run out.
Burridge slipped to 80-5, but Alton relaxed too much and Ballinger twice had Lee Savident dropped.
Abhay Gonella came on to bowl Savident for 36 and Will Steward fell to Ballinger for a fast 23. Alex Willoughby batted responsibly for 42 as Burridge edged towards 200, but he was undone by a yorker from Mark Heffernan who followed up by dismissing Dan Stancliffe and skipper Richard Ankers.
Burridge were bowled out for 199 in the 45th over.
Alton were keen to finish the season with a win and a watchful second-wicket stand of 57 between Gonella and Hugo Hammond sent them on their way.
Alton moved past 100 before losing their third wicket and Gonella and skipper Myers took it on to 140 when the young opener ran himself out for a patient 50 off 108 balls.
The in-form Mark Heffernan was caught behind at the same score, but Myers and Michael Heffernan edged Alton towards victory.
With 15 runs required off three overs, Heffernan was caught for 20, but overseas player Jamison finished the job with three boundaries in what is likely to be his final league appearance for the club.
Myers finished 46 not out in a four-wicket victory that should raise Alton’s confidence for the T20 Cup final which starts at 3pm. For details on travel arrangements, visit www.altoncc.co.uk
