Aldershot Town assistant manager Mark Jones felt there were plenty of positives after his side lost 4-2 on penalties against Fulham under-21s after an entertaining 2-2 draw.

“It was a topsy-turvy game,” said Jones.

“There's certainly some frustrating bits I think we could have done better. I think at times we can be much tidier with the ball. At times we were a little bit guilty of giving silly passes away where we can be securing it.

“Perhaps on the attack sometimes we turn it over a little bit quickly and then we're having to defend, so there's definitely areas we need to improve there.

“I thought we did improve as the game went on. I thought second half we probably shaded it.

“Fulham are a very good side. They've got a lot of talented players – as you would expect at a Premier League academy. They’re well coached. At times they caused us a few problems with their rotations and moving the ball quickly. They're very sharp.

“I think our lads can perhaps learn from that a little bit on how to look after the ball and how to improve our technical ability.

“I thought the effort was there. The game could have gone either way.

“I’m disappointed we didn't win the penalty shoot-out. You always want to win every game, but it was a pretty close one.

“It was good to get 90 minutes in the tank for some lads who haven't had 90 minutes. I'm thinking people like Conor Lawless, Elijah Oladunjoye, Jack Matton, Kwaku Frimpong and Marcus Wyllie. Those lads haven't had 90 minutes for some time.

“It was a decent game. It was quite end-to-end. We just came off the wrong side of it but there are lots of positives and, as always, lots to improve.”
