Aldershot Town extended their unbeaten run in the National League to four games with a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to FC Halifax Town.

Substitute Marcus Wyllie’s 80th-minute goal – his first in the league for the Shots – was enough to give Aldershot all three points in front of a crowd of 1,960 at the EBB Stadium.

The visitors nearly took the lead in the 15th minute, when Conor Carty slipped a pass through to Will Hugill, whose low shot was well blocked by debutant Shots keeper Jonathan Macaulay.

The Shaymen had another effort at goal a minute later, but Cody Johnson dragged his right-footed shot from range well wide of the far post.

Halifax went close again on 19 minutes when Amari Morgan-Smith received the ball in space on the left-hand side of the box and cut inside before curling his right-footed effort just wide of the far post.

The Shots had a golden opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty in the 25th minute. Michael Stickland headed the ball back across goal and when Kiki Oshilaja was fouled referee Matthew Russell had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Tristan Abrahams stepped up from the spot on 27 minutes and fired his left-footed penalty towards the bottom right-hand corner, but Halifax keeper True Grant went the right way and held Abrahams’ effort.

Aldershot won a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the box five minutes later, but Abrahams’ low left-footed effort was well held by Grant.

A neat dummy by Hakeem Sandah won the Shots another free-kick in the 40th minute, but Abrahams hit his curling left-footed effort just wide of the right-hand post.

The Shaymen went close on 43 minutes when a swift counter-attack ended with Tayt-Lemar Trusty hitting his effort over the bar.

The Shots started the second half brightly and nearly opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Nino Adom-Malaki slipped a pass to Tyrese Dyce on the left, and Dyce clipped an inviting ball to the back post which was met by Michee Efete, whose effort went over the bar.

Aldershot went close again five minutes later when Marcus Dinanga found Adom-Malaki on the left-hand side of the box, and Adom-Malaki took a touch before firing a powerful left-footed effort goalwards which was parried away for a corner by Grant at his near post.

The resulting set piece dropped to Abrahams, whose left-footed effort was deflected over the bar for another corner.

The Shots continued to push for an opening, and Dominic Odusanya let fly from range on 63 minutes, but his right-footed effort went wide of the left-hand post.

Shots boss Scott Davies made a double change in the 65th minute, with Alfonso Tenconi and Wyllie replacing Abrahams and Dinanga.

Davies made his third change of the afternoon on 76 minutes, with Brody Peart replacing Sandah.

Peart nearly made an immediate impact when he drove forward to the edge of the box, but he failed to get enough power on his left-footed effort to trouble Grant.

The Shaymen went close in the 78th minute when Cruz Allen cut the ball back from the left to Ben Tollitt in the middle of the box, whose right-footed effort from close range was smartly parried away by Macaulay.

The Shots broke the deadlock on 80 minutes when Peart’s delivery from the right found Wyllie, whose right-footed effort beat Grant at his near post.

Davies made a double change in the 90th minute, with Elijah Oladunjoye and Jordan Alves replacing Dyce and Adom-Malaki.

Five minutes of added time were indicated, but the Shots saw the closing stages out professionally to earn their third win of the season in the league and make it 11 points from their first six games.
