BADSHOT LEA have freshened up their playing squad as they enter a crucial period of their season.

They have snapped up defender Connor Gales and exciting winger Jared Myers.

Gales is a dependable and experienced left back who has played for Farnham Town, Godalming and Spelthorne and he impressed in the Baggies’ 3-2 win at Colliers Wood United last weekend.

Teenager Myers is a talented wide player who has been on the fringes of the Farnborough’s side in the Southern League.

He also played at the weekend and co-manager Gavin Smith is delighted to get both players.

"We were good on Saturday - the scoreline did not reflect the game, as it was quite a dominant display.

"The new lads did well - Connor knows a lot of our players already and we’ve been looking for a left-footer at the back for a while, so when he put something on Twitter we were straight on the case.

"Dave Ford and I watched Jared play against Met Police in the cup and got him in for a friendly and he was very exciting.

"He can play for us again on Saturday, which is a positive, but we don’t know how long we have got him for. We’ll see.

"Farnborough are doing well, Jared has featured in a couple of cup games and been on the bench in the league, but although he’s young - he’s just turned 18 - he’s an exciting talent.

"I’m not sure if we’ll have him for two games or for five, but he has increased the competition in the squad and he’s playing well."

The win took the Baggies back to the top of the Combined Counties Premier Division South table, as Beckenham and Walton & Hersham battled out a goalless draw.

"That was nice but we’re not getting excited," he said.

"We wanted to better last season’s start and now we’re two points off last year’s 14-game start.

"Last year 14 games saw us win ten, draw one and lose three. We’re on 29 points now after 12 games - that’s a really good points tally for that number of games.

"If we can match last season’s tally, that would be tremendous as we’ll be five games off halfway through the season.

"If we wanted to think about getting promoted, we’d be looking at getting 80-odd points. To do that a team can afford to lose only a certain number of games. A team have to be right on it for the whole season.

"I’d be delighted if we get our points tally into the 70s - for us, that would be a good season."

This weekend Badshot Lea take a break from league action to travel to play Southern Counties East Premier side Fisher in the FA Vase.

"We’re not too sure what to expect, to be honest," said Smith.

"Whatever the weather it’ll be on, as it’s on a 3G pitch. We have some good technical players who will enjoy the surface and if we pass the ball like we did on Saturday, we will be fine.

"We want a run in the competition. Our chairman Mark Broad is really good - he never puts pressure on us.

"We are a raw and young side and the chairman is happy with how things are progressing - but the Vase is the one competition he wants to have a run on.

"The Vase is about teams from our level. There are good sides at our level, but you never know - it’s something we want to do well in."

The Baggies are on the road again next Tuesday when they play Wallingford in the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup.

Farnham Rugby Club are looking to raise a hair-raising £30,000 from their Movember efforts this year.

They have a number of events planned this year to help them reach their target.

Club member David Hall said: "Our aim is to beat our previous amazing efforts and raise £30,000, as well as spreading awareness.

"We will be joined this year by the efforts of seniors, women, the vets, the academy, juniors, minis and Touch teams - and will be under one large Farnham RUFC team.

"We will be walking 60km to Richmond’s ground on November 20 as a group, to watch the Mo Bro rugby match at the Richmond Athletic Ground before the Championship game Richmond v Ampthill.

"We also have many more things to come.

"Movember involves the growing of moustaches during the month to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s suicide."
