CHERTSEY TN 4, FARNHAM TN 1
FARNHAM Town’s poor run continued with a heavy defeat at Chertsey, one of the teams they should be beating in the lower reaches of the Combined Counties Premier League.
The score flattered Chertsey, who had the rub of the green, but Farnham had only themselves to blame for some sub-standard defending.
Matt Petts denied Chertsey an early goal with a good block from Joel Thompson and the keeper later denied the same player in a one-on-one.
For 25 minutes, it was all Chertsey who were winning most of the 50-50 tackles.
Then Farnham had their first sight of goal and it needed a well-timed tackle to dispossess Matt Glass.
This seemed to spur the visitors on and they enjoyed a better spell. Glass was unlucky with an acutely angled shot that came back off the post.
So it was slightly against the run of play when Chertsey went ahead on 40 minutes. Joao Tiago’s innocuous shot seemed to deceive Petts and the ball somehow crept into the corner off the upright.
Farnham equalised six minutes into the second half. A clumsy challenge by Meddie Nsuguba felled John Lancashire and Glass thumped home the penalty.
The visitors continued to look dangerous on the break, but the game swung Chertsey’s way on the hour when Thompson was fouled and John Pomroy scored from the spot.
The goal visibly boosted Chertsey’s confidence. Four minutes later, Jack Wadmore blocked a clearance and the ball fell to Thompson who calmly chipped Petts.
With six minutes left, Tiago flicked the ball on, Farnham failed to clear their lines and Jamie Ross slotted home Chertsey’s fourth goal.
Badshot Lea 0, Epsom & Ewell 1. A spectacular free-kick goal after 14 minutes proved enough to decide a closely-contested game between Badshot Lea and high-riding Epsom & Ewell. The Baggies started well, with the strong wind behind them, but a free-kick, 20 yards out, gave Epsom their chance and Matt Ferdinando’s scorching shot gave Pat Kinsella no chance.
