HEAVY snow has left this weekend’s busy sporting programme in doubt.
Much of Hampshire and Surrey was blanketed by the first significant snowfall of the winter on Thursday night and into Friday, and the prospects of much play appear slim.
Football looks like being particularly hardest hit.
Badshot Lea chairman Mark Broad described as "very doubtful" his side’s Combined Counties League Premier Division clash with Balham, who currently groundshare with Colliers Wood in south-west London.
Lea will be particularly keen to play after suffering a 3-0 defeat at Spelthorne Sports last Saturday, the first defeat for the club’s new management duo of Gavin Smith and Dave Ford who took over from Keith Hills at the end of December.
Division One title chasers Farnham Town find themselves in the same boat having lost their two league games after winning their previous four.
But fifth-placed Town’s big six-pointer against fellow title rivals Epsom & Ewell tomorrow is also in doubt as the pitch at Chipstead, with whom Epsom & Ewell currently groundshare, was left under a blanknet of snow from earlier in the week.
Farnham Town were outplayed last Saturday against Bagshot and were beaten 4-1, just five days after a surprising 1-0 home defeat at the hands of lowly Cove at the Memorial Ground.
In the Sydenhams Wessex League, Alton Town face an anxious wait to see if their game against Newport could go ahead after the Isle of Wight was also hit hard by Thursday’s snowfall.
If the game falls victim to the weather, it will a second postponement in four days for the Brewers after their North Hampshire Cup semi-final against Andover New Street was called off on Wednesday night.
In the Premier Division, Alresford Town are due to take on Baffins Milton Rovers at Arlebury Park.
Aldershot Town’s EBB Stadium also felt the full force of Thursday night’s snow and ice but the Shots are without a game as their scheduled National League opponents, Solihull Moors, are still involved in the FA Trophy.
With more snow forecast on Thursday afternoon, and with temperatures barely rising above freezing, Alton’s London & South East Junior Vase rugby quarter-final tie with Old Mid-Whitgiftian in Croydon is subject to a 5pm pitch inspection.
And a late decision will be taken on myriad South Hockey League and Hampshire Hockey League matches, including Aldershot & Farnham’s match away at Wimborne Wayfarers in men’s Hampshire/Surrey 1 and Hampshire Ladies’ home game against Southampton in Division 3B of the women’s South Hockey League at Woolmer Hill.
