ALRESFORD TN 2, AFC PORTCHESTER 2
A DRAW was about the right result as AFC Portchester’s five-match winning run was ended by Alresford.
But it took a last-gasp goal by Lukas McCartney to save the game for Alresford at a windy and rain-drenched Arlebury Park.
The in-form visitors played the better football in the skiddy conditions, but the Magpies hung in there and came from behind to snatch a draw that keeps them fifth in the Sydenhams Premier League, level on points with Portchester who, with games in hand, are well placed to break into the top three.
Alresford defied the hard rain to take the lead with just two minutes gone, Sam Burt firing in a shot that went in off the upright.
Ten minutes later, they could have doubled their lead when Ben White slipped Burt through, but this time keeper saved well in a one-on-one.
Portchester then got into their stride and began to give Dan Kempson a busy time in the home goal.
Even so, Alresford were disappointed not to increase their advantage before half-time. The lively Burt had a shot blocked after an excellent run and Adam Pearson missed a good headed chance.
Pearson went off injured in the second half, having taken a heavy challenge earlier on, and the Magpies seemed to lose their way – especially at the back.
On 65 minutes, they were punished for poor marking at a corner and Liam Bush scrambled the ball in for Portchester’s equaliser.
Barely two minutes later, Aresford were guilty of more sloppy defending and Garry Moody finished clinically to put the visitors in front.
Portchester seemed to have done enough to win the game as both sides began to flounder on the heavy surface.
Alresford’s last chance was a corner as the match went into added time. The Magpies had everyone up and the visitors pulled everyone back, but McCartney’s strong header found a way through and hit the back of the net to salvage a draw for his side.
• Alresford host local rivals Horndean this Saturday and their tough schedule continues with a trip to second-placed Blackfield & Langley on Tuesday.
