PLAYERS and supporters of Aldershot Town and Bradford City paid their respects to our fallen service heroes with a two-minute silence ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie at the EBB Stadium.
In driving rain, the 2,500-strong crowd fell silent the day before Armistice Day to mark the centenary of the guns falling silent at the end of the First World War.
And Royal British Legion veterans marched on the pitch proudly holding their standards.
It was a particularly poignant tribute for the home players and supporters given Aldershot’s long military history and its deep Armed Forces links.
Laura Smith, chief executive of Aldershot Town Football Club, said: “We were immensely proud to honour Remembrance Day at the club before Saturday’s FA Cup game. This year was especially poignant as it marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
“The town has such a rich military history and we were glad we could honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we have today.”
And she added: “We are grateful to our colleagues at the Aldershot Garrison and the Royal British Legion for their support in organising the pre-match activities.”
The game finished 1-1 and the teams will replay next Tuesday in West Yorkshire.
