Badshot Lea co-manager Gavin Smith was delighted with his side after they swept aside Combined Counties Premier Division South leaders Colliers Wood United 4-1 at Westfield Lane on Saturday.

The win moved the Baggies just one point behind the league leaders, with three games in hand.

Smith’s side now have seven wins out of seven in the league, although the co-manager hadn’t been happy with some of his side’s performances.

That all changed on Saturday, when the Baggies comprehensively saw off Colliers Wood.

The visitors had taken an early lead, but Dean Rule’s equaliser and Tane Caubo’s composed finish gave the Baggies the lead at the break. Mal Thomas added the third, before Victor Ocansey completed the scoring.

And Smith was very pleased with his side’s performance.

“We got off to a fast start but went one down, although we were still the better of the two teams,” he said.

“We went in at half time 2-1 up and knew we’d played well. The lads were happy and the message was to carry on in the second half.

“Mal was not happy he was on the bench, but the boys have been doing well and he will be important for us. He scored with his first touch after coming on.

“We were forced into an enforced change with Tane coming off and Vic coming on at centre-back, which led to a reshuffle, but Vic scored with his first touch from a corner.

“It helped we were playing top of the table on Saturday, as if you’re not up for that you won’t be up for many games.”

The Baggies will aim to continue their winning run when they host bottom side Banstead Athletic this Saturday (3pm), but Smith is wary of the dangers of complacency and the challenge Banstead will offer his side.

“Banstead is always a tough game for us,” said Smith.

“For some reason we always find it hard. They are a difficult team to play against.

“We need to make sure we have the right mindset and attitude.

“With the position Banstead are in they probably won’t be wide open or go toe-to-toe with us.

“I expect they will be disciplined in their shape and it will be up to us to see if we can break them down.

“The lads are confident at the minute though, and we have a lot of goalscorers on the pitch and on the bench.”
