ON a drizzly Friday morning, 92 Cowdray Park members were entertained to a very different rendition of the Chelsea theme tune ‘Blue is the Colour’ to herald in the new lady captain, Tessa Stockwell.

An ardent Chelsea fan, Tessa wore a Chelsea shirt to tee off from a 12-inch high tee with a lightweight football. She didn’t know whether to hit it with a driver or kick it. Instinct took over and she kicked it, having played the game for 17 years. Etiquette demanded she had another go, this time with a golf ball and club.

The players then set off to various parts of the course for the shotgun start, playing an Ambrose Texas Scramble format. Back in the clubhouse, the winners were presented with their prizes as follows:

Ladies – 1st, Sandra Barber & Judy Stillwell (80.75); 2nd, Sue Brown & Jenny Clegg (81.5); 3rd, Pat Wallace & Ann Tyrrell (82). Men – 1st, Martin Day & Mark Jasper (65.5); 2nd, Sean & Lee Pay (67.25); 3rd, Sean Gallagher & Trevor Challen (68.5). Mixed – 1st, Mike & Jane Holden (70.25); 2nd, Tony Watson & Chris Sommerville (72.5); 3rd, Vic & Jean Barnett (74). Nearest the Pin: Men – Martin Day (3rd); Brian Carpenter (17th). Ladies – Pat Wallace (9th); Jenny Clegg (11th).

Cowdray Park Ladies played a Turkey Trot with a difference. The format was stableford with double points on the par 5s.

The winner, with a remarkable 45 points, was Jill Parry. Other placings: 2nd, Helen Chapman (42), on c/b from Catherine Staples; 4th, Myrna Heustice (41); 5th, Sue Brown (40), on c/b from Wendy Street.
