A Haslemere Border Athletics Club member has won gold in the World Masters Athletics Championships half marathon W55 team event.

Susan Payne represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the championships in Torun, Poland, where she won the half marathon W55 gold with team-mates Susan McDonald and Clare Elms.

Payne also won a bronze medal in the cross-country eight kilometres team event in Torun with team-mates Elke Hausler and Sharyn Ramage.

She said: “The competition in Poland was fierce and the standard of athletes was high – it was a fantastic challenge.

“I focus my spare time on my athletics training, with a gold medal at the worlds in mind – so it was very sweet to achieve it.

“Thanks to the fantastic Haslemere Border Athletics Club – which is excellent in training so many outstanding athletes from elite through to beginners – and to my coach there, Dan Allaway, as well as my England and Great Britain coach Matt Long.

“I have always believed running is fantastic for both physical health and mental well-being.

“The sheer joy to be had by getting and staying fit, and enjoying the outdoors running – at any speed – whether to attain a goal or for the simple pleasure of it, is certainly an effort worth undertaking.

“Grassroots running clubs like Haslemere Border are vital to encourage beginners and to bring like-minded committed athletes together.”

Payne will run in the Chester half marathon on May 21.

She hopes to represent Great Britain in the European Championships in Pescara, Italy, which will be held from September 21 to October 1.
