THERE was a bumper turn-out of 20 riders for Alton CC/Owens Cycles’ last time trial of the summer series.

With Redmon CC having to cancel their regular time trial on the Dorking course due to road works, the Alton TT attracted more riders than usual and the field included visitors from the Twickenham and St Margarets clubs.

On a warm summer evening, it was fitting that the winner should be former Alton CC junior member Jack Freeman, now riding for VC Meudon, who got round the H10/8 A31 10-mile course in a time of 20mins 45secs.

Freeman often returns to ride with his first club on Alton’s Sunday runs.

Runner-up was David Wells of Petersfield Tri with 21-00 and third fastest was Jonny Newell of Twickenham CC in 21-19.

The Alton CC Summer Handicap League title was settled, as predicted, with Iain Cotton taking the honours for the first time after gaining another three points with his excellent time of 22-56.

Had last year’s league winner, Charlie Williams, not missed a couple of weeks in July, he may well have run Cotton close as his improving form and season’s best time of 24-39 gave him five points, comfortably securing him second place. Williams finished only six points behind Cotton who had a season’s tally of 41.

The consistent Shaun Blow returned another ‘short 23’, recording 23-24, while Keith Parrish saved the best for last with a season’s quickest 24-42. Gary Hodgson completed the Alton contingent with 28-57.

Alan Jacob, Dick Weatherbed, Eddie Stevens, Peter Remnant, Mike Hayward and Jim Woods performed the essential tasks of holding the stopwatches, steadying the riders and pushing them off at the start, and then checking them through at the finish.
