HASLEMERE II 3, WEYMOUTH 5

HASLEMERE 2nd XI were particularly keen to do well against Hampshire 1 high-fliers Weymouth and responded superbly after the visitors had taken the lead.

Will Bowes should have scored after a dazzling run by Tom Gee, but soon redeemed himself with a sharp shot for the equaliser.

Weymouth were reduced to the odd counter-attack as Haslemere sustained the pressure. Jacob Hall put his side ahead with a cool reverse-stick shot and things got even better when Haslemere won a short corner and Sanjay Appan made it 3-1 with an excellent drag-flick into the bottom corner.

Haslemere should have taken that lead into half-time, but a lucky deflection from a long ball forced Gee into a last-ditch challenge that conceded a penalty stroke. A five-minute rest for the centre-back and a crucial goal for Weymouth.

The second half was a scrappier affair and both sides had men in the sin-bin throughout. Weymouth handled the situation better and used their numerical advantage to score two quick goals to take a 4-3 lead.

Haslemere felt they could still get something from the game and worked the Weymouth keeper hard from short corners and shots from open play, but just couldn’t find the equaliser.

Haslemere then got caught on the break and Weymouth wrapped it up with their fifth goal.
