THE sporting event is rare where the winner can always be predicted beforehand. One such contest is Frensham Sailing Club’s annual open meeting for 2.4 design keelboats.

Numbers were down a little on previous years as a fleet of 12 gathered on Saturday, June 3. The furthest travelled visitor was Martin Whittingham-Jones from West Kirby, a regular supporter of this event.

But all eyes were on the world number one in this class, Megan Pascoe. She had already won this trophy six times, meaning that the other competitors felt somewhat uncertain of their chances.

The programme comprised two late afternoon races on the Saturday and four races the following day.

A westerly wind blew throughout, increasing in strength on the second day.

Although Megan, true to form, won five of the six races, she was given a good fight by Martin Whittingham-Jones and Jonathan Currel from Poole.

Also competing was Frensham’s Kate Hedley who played a big part in organising this popular event.

Once again, Megan Pascoe, just back from winning a major European trophy, left the fleet in her wake. Although she sailed under the flag of Weymouth Sailing Club, Megan is also a full Frensham member.

Afterwards, she thanked the club and the race officers who had provided such an enjoyable weekend.

Results: 1st, Megan Pascoe (Weymouth/ Frensham); 2nd, Martin Whittingham Jones (West Kirby SC); 3rd, Jonathan Currel (Parkstone YC); 4th, Kate Hedley (Frensham); 5th, Bruce Hill (Frensham); 6th, John Brooker (Frensham).
