DURING its long and distinguished history, Petersfield RFC has introduced a number of rugby firsts to the local community, extending the appeal of the game to people of all ages, from five years to 50-plus.
With all the age groups covered, touch and full contact rugby available and the senior players flying high in the league, the time was right for ’Field to reach out to another group – the social players.
The social player is the one who, for whatever reason, can no longer train during the week and play every Saturday, but misses his rugby, both the game and the social side.
On Saturday, Petersfield launched a series of matches for adults who would love to play when they have the time, no strings attached. They do not have to be full club members, just pitch up, pay a £10 match fee, and play.
If the first match was anything to go by, the scheme should have legs. A mixed side from the Petersfield and Haslemere areas played West Sussex neighbours Midhurst in what turned out to be an engaging, exciting game.
Things didn’t look so favourable at the start as Midhurst scampered through within seconds to score. However, the Barbarian ‘home’ side regrouped and fears of a one-sided encounter were allayed as they found a structure and strategy that worked for the disparate group of players.
An absorbing game followed in which the lead changed hands several times before Midhurst had the final say with the last try of the game, winning 27-22.
Afterwards, the scheme organiser, ’Field stalwart Twain Brighton, was showered with praise from all three contributing clubs. And Twain had his own plaudits for the group, many of whom had never played together before, for delivering such an entertaining match.
Early indications are that the three clubs involved are united in their support of the scheme and keen to involve other sides in Hampshire and West Sussex.
Twain Brighton stressed that the intention is to provide fun rugby for any adult age group and level of ability.
Interested parties will not have long to wait as the Social Rugby Group have another fixture at Penns Place next week, against the Isle of Wight.
