FRENSHAM Pond Sailing Club are inviting members of the public to visit the club’s home on Saturday, May 12.
Visitors to the Public Open Day (start 10am) will be able to tour the club site and, weather permitting, take a short sail in an instructor’s boat. Members will be on hand to explain the boats and answer any questions
Frensham SC specialise in two things. The club has a long tradition in introducing local children, aged from eight upwards, to the sport of competitive sailing. The results of this can be seen on the clubhouse honours board, crowded with World, European and national champions, as well as two Olympic helms.
Frensham has been called ‘The Nursery of Champions’ and members are keen to emphasise that youngsters are well looked after on the lake, with the club’s qualified instructors and on-water safety.
The club is also a key centre of Sailability, or sailing for the disabled. It has a fleet of Hansa dinghies – extremely safe sailing boats designed for disabled sailing – and this section has also produced champions.
Frensham also hosts possibly the largest fleet of Paralympic 2.4 keelboats. The club’s rear-commodore, Megan Pascoe, is a former world champion with this boat.
Frensham Sailing Club aso stress that the sport is inclusive and can be enjoyed by all. A club spokesman said: “Come along that day and enjoy the hospitality of very friendly and enthusiastic club with a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone.”
