The treasurer

Early in 2019, two of Swimability’s members were recognised for their long service during the club’s annual general meeting.

The town mayor at the time, David Attfield, made a surprise appearance to thank Chris and Julie Stephens for their outstanding contribution to disability sport (pictured above).

They both began volunteering at the club in the early 1980s following an accident that left Chris severely limited in movement, reliant on a wheelchair, and with limited ability to speak.

Despite his accident, which happened in 1976, Chris started swimming at the Farnham pool after it opened in 1981 and immediately became actively involved with the club.

He has not only been a regular swimmer but he has served as the club’s treasurer since 1982.

Julie has been a constant support and an outstanding volunteer in her own right.

Chairman Alan Taylor said: ‘The mayor’s surprise visit a couple of years ago made the occasion especially memorable.

“Chris and Julie have been regular supporters of disability sport for more than 30 years. That’s a fantastic achievement and everyone in the club is grateful for their loyalty and amazing commitment.”
