HEAVY snow played havoc with the sporting programme at the weekend.
Both Combined Counties Football League games fell victim to the wintry blast – Badshot Lea’s Premier Division game at Balham and Farnham Town’s game against Division One promotion rivals Epsom & Ewell, with the Chipstead pitch, which Ewell groundshare, being under several inches of snow.
It was a similar tale in the Sydenhams Wessex League with Alresford Town’s Premier League clash with Baffins Milton Rovers at Arlebury Park called off, while Alton Town, in Division One, had a snowbound pitch and travel problems to contend as they were due to face Isle of Wight side Newport at St George’s Park.
And the Brewers’ league game on Tuesday night away at lowly Totton & Eling was also postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
Alton’s rugby players fared no better as their scheduled London & South East Division Junior Vase quarter-final tie with Old Mid-Whitgiftians in Croydon was called off. It has been rescheduled for this Saturday with a semi-final place at stake.
And there was a near total whiteout for the Herald area’s hockey sides, with only Alton Ladies managing to play. But they made it count with a 4-1 win against Southampton University to move up to fifth place in women’s Hampshire 2.
