Right at Home GF welcomed more than 14 residents, care professionals and civic representatives to The White Barn in Runfold St George on Thursday, October 8.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Farnham, Graham and Judy White, were among those who took part in the Dementia Experience Open Morning, which combined an awareness presentation with practical activities designed to encourage greater understanding and empathy.
Alastair Shanks, managing director and owner of Right at Home GF, led a session drawing on his experience of delivering training to more than 1,000 Dementia Friends across the local community.
Participants then took part in an immersive simulation led by Right at Home's Adriana Mendonca.
Wearing weighted vests, blurred glasses and other adapted equipment, they attempted everyday tasks such as making beds and folding laundry while experiencing simulated sensory and physical restrictions.
The activities were designed to demonstrate how seemingly simple household tasks can become more challenging for people experiencing cognitive and sensory difficulties.
Mr Shanks, who is also a trustee of Dementia Adventure, said: “Understanding dementia goes far beyond recognising symptoms in a textbook; it requires genuine empathy and stepping directly into the perspective of those living with the condition.
“Having the Mayor and Mayoress of Farnham join us alongside local residents made this a truly special morning for raising community awareness.”
The company holds its Dementia Experience sessions quarterly as part of its ongoing work supporting people living with dementia, their families and local carers.
The sessions also aim to give people practical insights into the difficulties that those affected by dementia may encounter in everyday life.
