A café has launched a grocery service to ease the impact of a temporary store closure in Liss.

Produce, toilet rolls and breakfast items are among the products being offered by Turtle Bean Café.

The service has been launched with vulnerable and less-abled residents in mind as the village’s Tesco Express and Post Office has been temporarily closed.

“It’s more for vulnerable people and those who might not be able to afford some of the higher prices for things like eggs and bacon,” said owner, Karin Hoogenhout.

“Since Tesco closed a couple of weeks ago I’ve spoken to a lot of people who have become quite anxious, as not everyone can drive or does internet shopping.

“The last time Tesco closed they had a small hut outside selling essential things but they haven’t this time.

“So we’ve decided to start a grocery service. We didn’t want to step on toes, so we’re not selling soft drinks or alcohol like Premier, and we’re going for low price eggs and bacon because obviously the butchers sells them.”

The Lower Mead Tesco Express is undergoing major work with new flooring and fire proofing being installed.

The store is expected to reopen on May 29 but there have been rumours the shop may open earlier than expected. Tesco shoppers have been directed to the Bell Hill and Causeway branches in the meantime, while the nearest Post Offices are in Rogate and Petersfield.

In the meantime, vegetables, crisps, tinned tuna, baked beans and milk are among the items being offered by the Turtle Bean with the full list viewable on their Facebook page. Flyers have also been distributed around the village.

Karin added: “Most of it comes from my suppliers, like Brakes, Booker and Bryants, and if someone wants something we can get it in.”
