A community group has got some hot property as it’s been given the keys to Bordon’s former MOD fire station.
The Whitehill & Bordon Community Trust has taken the lease of the landmark building from East Hampshire District Council.
The building was deemed surplus to requirements by the council last year with EHDC seeking alternative uses and bids for the Northern Gateway site.
And although there were several expressions of interest, the council and WBCT have formally signed a lease to bring the building back into community use.
The move marks an exciting new chapter for the much-loved building with the WBCT holding a board meeting on Monday (August 4) to ascertain future uses.
But there’s already talk of creating a vibrant central “community station” which offers events, information, support and community projects.
“We are delighted to have been the successful bidder and are already in talks with local organisations and charities,” said a spokesperson for the WBCT.
“There is still a lot of work to do to bring everything together but we hope to be able to open the doors to the public soon.”
The currently vacant building has a varied past and has been a Whitehill & Bordon Team office, eco-station and police offices in recent years.
It’s a non-designated heritage asset so EHDC were keen for the building to be retained with the Trust’s vision ticking numerous boxes.
“Landmark buildings are important for our residents and I am delighted to see that this well-known local landmark will be used for community purposes,” said Cllr Andy Tree, EHDC deputy leader and portfolio holder for Whitehill & Bordon.
"Our Cabinet was impressed with the WBCT’s vision and I now wish them well in moving the project forward to open up the building for the benefit of our residents.”
