“KEEP off our barrows or risk prosecution” – that’s the message being sent out after yet more vehicles were seen parking on the 4,000-year-old Bronze Age burial mounds at Whitehill Village Hall.
Yet despite the campaign by Hampshire county and East Hampshire district councillor Adam Carew and Woolmer Forest Heritage Society, three more vehicles have been seen parking on the burial mounds, including a white transit van belonging to Radian and a white Renault minibus, which is a district council registered taxi.
These incidents have already been reported to the police by residents, the Herald understands.
Cllr Carew said: “We need some urgent action here. I have already informed district council enforcement, Historic England and our county archaeologist.
“I am sure Radian and our taxi licensing/enforcement team at the district council will want to have words.
“What drivers are doing is not only compacting the soil and eroding the tumuli, it is a criminal act under the 1979 Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act.”
Cllr Carew said Historic England has “no objection” to more boulders being placed around the barrow, adding: “They are a bit of an eyesore but they seem to be the only thing we are allowed to do that actually works.”
He told the Herald the district council was also in the process of consulting on a Traffic Regulation Order which will see double yellow lines along here.
“It is illegal to park on the grass behind double yellow lines so people parking on the grass mounds could also get ticketed,” he said.
Cllr Carew is set to meet the heritage society chairman and village hall committee this week to discuss the positioning of the boulders, which he has offered to pay for out of his councillor’s grant.
He will also meet Historic England next week and will be inviting all interested parties to attend, including the police.
