MILL Chase Gym user Kelvin Smith has completed the equivalent distance of cycling from Land’s End to John O’ Groats on a hand bike, and raised £500 for charity in the process.
He completed his gruelling challenge on February 5 at Mill Chase Gym, at Bordon’s Mill Chase Leisure Centre. The total distance was approximately 875 miles, taking 15 weeks of cycling.
Mr Smith, who has trouble walking, started attending Mill Chase Gym in May 2014 after spending several weeks in hospital due to back spasms triggered by his cerebral palsy. He was determined to improve his strength and fitness.
As well as his personal development, Mr Smith has spent years dedicating himself to addressing the needs of young adults with profound and multiple disabilities. He has achieved this as an unpaid trustee of Parity For Disability, raising awareness, fundraising, rallying support and providing the practical input to help the charity to function.
His latest challenge has helped to raise funds to keep the charity going. Parity For Disability is based in Aldershot and supports families across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.
“Kelvin attends the gym twice a week and his workouts last approximately two and a half hours,” said Mill Chase Gym’s Sue Lewis.
“He is a true inspiration to everyone who attends the gym, and the camaraderie that has built up between all gym users, disabled or able bodied, is exceptional. His wicked sense of humour and sheer determination are outstanding.”
