A parliamentary hopeful has launched a petition to save Bordon’s tip from closing.

Greg Stafford believes the move would inconvenience thousands of residents and could lead to more fly-tipping on East Hampshire’s roads.

The Household Waste & Recycling Centre (HWRC) is one of 12, along with Petersfield, which could be closed by Hampshire County Council as it bids to plug a chastening £132million funding shortfall.

A consultation is well underway with residents having until March 31 to make their views on how to save money on 13 services, which include HWRCs, highway maintenance, libraries, subsidised public transport and social services.

Mr Stafford, who is the Conservative candidate for the new Farnham & Bordon seat, has called on concerned residents to support the preservation of the Station Road facility.

Hundreds have already signed his petition but there’s always room for more, with colleagues in East Hampshire District Council supporting his campaign.

He said: "We cannot allow such an essential service to be taken away from us. By signing my petition today, you can join us in opposing the closure of the Bordon recycling centre and ensure that our voices are heard loud and clear."

Cllr Rob Mocatta, who represents Petersfield Butser on the county council, has also made a repeat call for residents to take part in the “hugely important” consultation.

“Hampshire residents have been extremely good about voicing their feelings about the recycling centres,” said Cllr Mocatta during a Petersfield Town Council meeting.

“If you have a view, particularly on the tips closing, go to the consultation online. It only takes give minutes and its really important. The more people that fill in the form the more likely Hampshire County Council will be in changing its mind.”
