A LEAKING petrol container has been discovered in a Bordon nature reserve.

And work is set to begin in the New Year to remove the contamination and clear up the mess.

Jamie Cummins, senior countryside ranger at Deadwater Valley Trust, said an “historic oil drum” was found, but “unfortunately the seal had broken and was leaking, causing an environmental problem”.

Deputy town clerk David Melsome said the canister was “ancient and possibly from previous army activity in the area”, and was in a “worn state and leaking”.

He confirmed the council has “engaged specialist clean-up contractors to examine the site”, and remove the contaminated soil and bag for disposal, remove the container, and dispose of all items environmentally before the soils are replenished.

Work will begin on January 6 and will require the length of access from the Savile Crescent allotment site up to the northern exit point to be closed for up to five days.
