THE Brownlee brothers achieved an imperious one-two in the latest round of the ITU World Triathlon Series in their home town of Leeds.

Dominating from early on the bike leg, Alistair and Jonny ran away from the competition in a race where Great Britain triathletes filled four of the top five places – a record in itself.

It was also a landmark occasion for Farnham Triathlon Club as, for the first time in the club’s history, they had a member competing as an adult elite over standard distance at the highest level.

Oscar Coggins, stepping up from the junior ranks this season and representing his native Hong Kong, took his place on the pontoon for the 1500m swim swim, 38.6km cycle and 10km run alongside some illustrious names.

The 17-year-old, youngest in the field, gave a remarkably mature performance over a testing course to stay in the main pack during the two-lap wetsuit swim (17mins 46secs) and draft legal cycle (1hr 23secs) sections before ‘hanging tough’ on the four-lap run (37-56) where others were either lapped or withdrew, to finish 41st and stop the clock at 1hr 57min 49secs. A very encouraging debut on the big stage.

Leeds also hosted a number of age-group events and those featuring Farnham Tri members included the Triathlon England Aquathlon Championships and the British Triathlon Standard Distance Championships.

Lynda Coggins took on both races and came away with two silver medals in the women’s 50-54 category. As FTC’s sole representative in Saturday’s aquathlon, she clocked 11-08 in the 750m open water swim and 24-17 for the 5km run to takes second place in an overall time of 38-59.

Showing no sign of fatigue for the next day’s standard distance triathlon, she led the 1500m swim out in 23-08 and despite losing the advantage after a 1-12-31 40km cycle section, maintained second place with a 48-19 10km run (total 2-32-09) to claim a second national medal in consecutive days.

Also making the podium for Farnham in the same race was Ian Howard who took a bronze in the M60-64 category, following splits of 26-29 swim, 1-08-31 bike and 50-17 run (2-34-06).

Gillian Barrett was the club’s third representative in this race and just missed out on the medals with fourth place (2-59-15) in the women’s 55-59 age-group.

David Barrett took on the open sprint race over half distances and finished ninth M60-64 in 1hr 59 mins 23secs.

A number of youth events completed a busy weekend for Farnham Tri. Promising junior Grace Kinnell led the field out of the 400m swim in 5-01. She went on to record 17-11 for a 10km bike and 11-10 in the 2.5km run to finish 13th junior female (overall 39-25).

Club members were also in action at two more standard (Olympic) distance triathlons, made even more challenging by hot and humid weather.

The Windsor Triathlon is a favourite event for Farnham, with the lure of a swim in the Thames followed by a cycle and run around some iconic royal landmarks. A squad of six for the standard distance was led home by Jason Harris in 2hrs 13mins 06secs.

Farnham results: Jason Harris, Cat Pos 1 M45, Swim 22-38, Bike 1-03-25, Run 40-10, Overall 2-13-06; Mark Whitehead, 18 M40, 25-00, 1-08-38, 48-31, 2-30-11; Paul Fairclough, 66 M35, 33-33, 1-15-58, 51-21, 2-50-17; Steve Barr, 99 M50, 29-42, 1-23-08, 1-00-36, 3-03-30; Pip Barr, 26 F40, 32-47, 1-33-31, 52-13, 3-08-46; Steven Gwyer, 118 M50, 27-43, 1-17-51, 1-13-52, 3-10-00.
