TILFORD beat The Refreshers by six wickets to retain the Tanner Cup in one of the club’s oldest Sunday fixtures, dating back to the 1930s.
The cup is a memorial to Peter Tanner, a barrister and Tilford resident, who died in the Second World War.
With a battery of five bowlers, Tilford soon turned to off-spin and the parched wicket gave considerable encouragement. Tilford made very few errors in the field and the visitors were eventually all out for 191 in 47 overs. Geoff Coombe bowled a miserly spell and young Alex Beard impressed with his control, while Mark Bussell snaffled three catches.
Tilford got off to a flyer as Martin Cantwell and Bussell raced to 44 before being parted. All the batsman made telling contributions, with Guy Wilson and Beard playing some handsome strokes, and Tilford reached their target with several overs to spare.
REFRESHERS 191 (Bell 39, Mculster 34, Lord 34; G Coombe 4-19, A Beard 2-24).
TILFORD 193-4 (M Cantwell 40, G Sprittles 41 not out, Adam 31 not out, G Wilson 30, A Beard 24).
