THE unlikely scenario of Tongham obtaining no points on the last day of the season, thereby allowing Fernhurst to snatch the I’Anson Division Two title, became more of a possibility after Ben Harrison had scored a fast century for Frensham 2nd XI.

Harrison, with help from Gary Allison (30), rescued Frensham after Nick Cook (4-42) and veteran Scott Meyer (3-36) had threatened to bowl them out for a low score.

Harrison’s superb 105 not out took Frensham to 217-9 at tea and Tongham, having suffered only their second defeat of the season the previous week, faced a test of their character, and even more so after Freddie Cousins had skipper Liam Gadd caught for a duck by his opposite number, Martin Breddy.

But Tongham showed the stuff of champions as Adam Farrier was joined by Mathew Carringon in a match-winning partnership. Carrington finally went for 56, but Farrier found another fine partner in Subash Gurang and the opener just had time to complete an unbeaten ton before Tongham cruised to a seven-wicket victory in the 37th over.

Tongham, who were presented with the Herald Cup by competition treasurer Suzanne Munday, will be joined in Division? One next season by runners-up Fernhurst who beat Tilford II in their final fixture.

Tilford were no pushover and, opting to bat first at Fernhurst’s immaculate ground and square, totalled 186-8 in their 45 overs. Bruce Baxendale and Tristan Rissik (3-20 in 9 overs) recorded fine figures, but Fernhurst yielded 41 extras, including 29 wides, and with number 7 James Clement scoring an excellent 50, the visitors posted what looked a competitive total.

But Fernhurst strolled to victory on the flat track. Mike Allen (62 not out) and Mark Charman (72) resumed their prolific opening partnership and with useful supporting knocks from James Johnson and Leon Fourie, Fernhurst knocked off the runs in only 28 overs, with eight wickets intact.

Bottom side Badshot Lea bade farewell to Division Two with defeat away to Grayshott II. The visitors were bowled out for 130, with Tom Spooner hitting a spirited 32 and the durable Andy Lang taking 3-29 in his nine overs.
