AFTER two near total wash-outs, there was at least some I’Anson action on Saturday, but rain and persistent thunder caused 16 of the scheduled 27 fixtures to be abandoned or cancelled.

There were two results in Division One and Witley defied the elements to record their first win of the season after 12 consecutive defeats.

With an eye on the weather, Ollie Hickman inserted Pirbright and things didn’t go to plan as openers James Thompson and Awais Khan put on 32 in 11 overs.

The introduction of Adam Keane brought instant reward as he took a wicket with his third ball.

Tea was taken early with the visitors 64-3 and, on the restart, the dismissal of the dangerous Robbie Jones signalled a collapse. Chris Munday snapped up three wickets in seven balls and a couple of run-outs contributed to Pirbright being dismissed for a modest 79. Keane recorded excellent figures of 4-20 from 11.3 overs.

Witley lost a wicket to the fourth ball of their innings and although Gareth Phillips and Hickman steadied things, the home side were looking nervy at 43-4 and then 58-5, with Hickman out for 39 and his team still requiring 22 runs.

Ollie Phillips, supported by Billy-Joe Duddell, rose to the challenge and settled the issue with 20 not out, including a couple of monster sixes.

Chiddingfold had the better of a draw against Tilford after only two overs were lost to the weather, with the storm clouds mainly avoiding the Woodside Road ground.

The home side, put in to bat, lost both openers for ducks, but Paul Ward and Paul Harrison turned the innings around with an impressive partnership of 96. Harrison was in particularly fine form, launching five sixes, while skipper Ward gave solid support before departing for 34.

Harrison was caught for a classy 80 with the score on 124 and, thereafter, Chiddingfold faltered against Jake Austin and Jason Stones, and were all out for 160 after exactly 45 overs.

Tilford were never able to score at the required rate against an accurate attack. Opener Nathan Sprittles grafted away before being sixth man out for 43 and Austin hit two sixes in his 30.

Austin fell to Paul Hundley, the leading wicket-taker in Division One, who returned 3-30 from 14 overs, while spinner Neil Garrett probed the batsmen consistently to claim 4-28 in 14. Tilford were held to 122-8 off 43 overs.
