FARNHAM Roller Hockey Seniors played in the National Division One tournament in Halifax last weekend and finished the event top of Pool B.

It was a tough start for Farnham against Spen Valley who quickly pressed hard in attack and took a two-goal lead before Jorge Duarte clawed one back.

Farnham were back in the game at 2-1, but failed to find their best form in the second half and conceded two more goals. Duarte scored again to make the final score more respectable at 4-2.

Learning from their mistakes, Farnham began positively against Plymouth and were soon in front. Mauro Soromenho and Jorge Duarte scored regularly and although Plymouth rallied to get two of their own, Farnham ran out 6-2 winners.

Confidence was high in the third match, but Walsall played a tight defence and Farnham struggled to create chances in the penalty area. They solved the problem by making use of the space to shoot from distance.

Vito Uva supplied a precise pass for Matt Carey to fire into the net from just inside the halfway line. The goals then flowed from Uva, Soromenho, Carey and, in particular, Duarte who scored four times. Final score: 8-1 to Farnham.

The Maidstone team failed to turn up for the fourth match and Farnham were awarded a 10-0 win.

There are two more tournament days and Farnham Seniors aim to make the best use of home advantage at Farnham Sports Centre on February 11 (10.30am start).

Farnham’s younger teams have tournament action on March 11 and May 13.

The club will welcome new players of all ages. Visit www.farnhamrollerhockey. co.uk for details.
