Badshot Lea continued their impressive start to the season by easing to a 1-0 win in their Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup tie at Wokingham & Emmbrook.

Cameron Gyeabour hit the only goal of the game after 66 minutes.

Co-manager Gavin Smith was relieved with the win, admitting the Baggies – who are one of only two sides with a 100 per cent record in the Combined Counties Premier South – weren’t at their best.

“It was good to win – we want to win every game we play,” he said.

“But I was impressed with Wokingham. They played well and put us under a lot of pressure.

“We probably played them at a bad time – they have a new manager and he had a few young lads who had lots of energy and wanted to impress, and we weren’t really on our game early on.

“We made a few changes as it’s good to give players a game who haven’t been in the side much – that’s the benefit of having a big squad – but that’s no excuse.

“In the first half especially we were nowhere near our best, although we were better after the break – although Wokingham had a good chance to equalise near the end.

“I would think they were disappointed they didn’t get anything from the game.”

The Baggies made it five league wins out of five with a 3-1 win at Fleet at the weekend.

Goals by Dean Rule, George Frise and Harrison Livingstone secured the three points and Smith said: “It was one of those games when I always felt comfortable we would win.

“We have a big squad now and have real competition for places, and that’s ideal.

“It’s nice to have a 100 per cent record but don’t get carried away – we have played only five games.

“It’s always nice to get off to a good start because it gives you a bit of breathing space, and helps when you have those days when things don’t go to plan.

“We are at home to Balham on Saturday and that will be a tough game – they’re always an energetic young side. But we will be looking to keep our winning streak going.”

The following week sees a tasty encounter – a trip to Raynes Park Vale, the other side with a perfect start.
