Badshot Lea manager Gavin Smith was pleased to see his side return to action for the first time in two weeks as they won 3-2 at Cobham in the Surrey Senior Cup last Tuesday night (December 12).

The Baggies had seen three Isthmian League South Central Division matches postponed because of the weather since losing 3-1 at Hanworth Villa on November 28.

Smith’s side didn’t show any rust at Cobham, and took the lead in the 34th minute when George Hedley reacted quickest after Josh Keeya’s shot had hit the crossbar.

Keeya then doubled the away side’s advantage on 44 minutes after being set up by Adam New, but Cobham pulled a goal back just before half-time through Eoin Bolger’s free kick.

The home side equalised in the second half through Ryan Marklew, but Anuar Ceesay slotted home on 71 minutes to send the Baggies through to the next round.

“It was definitely good to have a game on,” said Smith.

“It had been a little while and you need to stay in the rhythm of playing games.

“You could say the break came at a good time for us with the number of injuries we’ve had, but it was important to get back to playing.

“We played really well in the first half and got 2-0 up, but Cobham scored just before half-time so they were still in the game at half-time.

“We had about 80 per cent of possession in the first half and we looked good.

“Sometimes when you play well in the first half that can make things difficult at half-time as you tell the players to keep doing the same things in the second half – but it doesn’t actually work out like that.

“I’ve talked to other managers about this and they’ve said the same thing. We weren’t as good in the second half and Cobham got back level, but Anuar produced a good bit of play to win us the game.”

The Baggies were without a fixture on Saturday, and were frustrated by the weather on Tuesday night when their Velocity Cup match at home to Chipstead was postponed after persistent rain.

Badshot Lea will travel to Sutton Common Rovers in the Isthmian League South Central Division on Saturday (3pm), before hosting bottom side Binfield at Westfield Lane at 7.45pm next Wednesday night (December 27).
