BADSHOT LEA co-manager Gavin Smith was disappointed with his side’s performance after they beat Abbey Rangers in the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

The match finished 2-2, with the Baggies then winning 4-1 on penalties at their Combined Counties Premier Division North opponents.

Kane Fitzgerald gave the Baggies the lead in the second half, but the hosts soon equalised through Marcus Williams.

Danilo Cadete scored to put the Baggies back in front, but Williams equalised in second-half stoppage time as the game went to penalties.

“From our point of view our performance was not up to our usual levels,” said Smith.

“It was a pretty even game. They had the best of the first 20 minutes and we had a good spell in the second half.

“They scored a late equaliser to take it to penalties, which was probably a fair result.

“Whereas we had ten or 11 players at the top of their game against Walton & Hersham, we probably only had two players at our best on Tuesday.

“Nobody had a poor game though, and we found a way.”

The Baggies return to Combined Counties Premier Division South action tomorrow (Saturday) with a trip to Knaphill (3pm), and Smith is expecting a tough game for his side.

“We’ve going to have to be at our best to get a result on Saturday,” said Smith.

“Knaphill have brought in a lot of new players.

“We’re still in a good position though and have a lot to play for in the league and two cup competitions.

“I know we can beat the best teams in the league on our day. We just need to be consistent.”
